I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to be back in Paris for Fashion Week right now.
There’s just something about being in that city that always inspires my creativity, my love for fashion and just generally makes me ridiculously happy. While I won’t be doing PFW at my usual pace this year {since I’m with le bebe}, I’m looking forward to a few shows, taking in some sights, maybe doing a little shopping and definitely indulging in a lot of delicious food.
I’m also looking forward to stepping up my style game while I’m there. French girls are known for their chic style and cool girl fashion, and after spending a few weeks in a bit of a fashion lull {thanks to dealing with the current chaos of home renovation} and the LA weather {Fall where are you?}, I’m ready to bring my “A Game.”
In order to prepare for my trip, I went back to the core principals of Parisian style and today I’m sharing with you how to pull off “effortlessly chic” like a French girl.
1. Keep It Classic and Stick To The Basics
When it comes to classic and timeless style, no one does it like a French girl. That being said, anyone can get the look when they start with the basics. All you need are the right wardrobe staples and you’ll be on your way to attaining that chic Parisian style. Here’s what you’ll need…
A white blouse, silk camisole, a turtleneck and a cardigan.
Jeans, black trousers and a chic skirt.
Shift, slip or wrap dress – depending on what flatters you the most.
A blazer, a trench coat and a leather jacket.
A ballet flat or loafer, block heel and a small structured purse.
2. Choose Quality Over Quantity – Spend Wisely
Instead of buying a ton of different items and trying out various trends {which let’s be honest, you may or may not ever wear}, put your money towards better quality pieces that you will wear for years to come.
Look at what the garment is made of {choose more natural fibers over synthetic fabrics}.
Get pieces tailored. This is a nice hack if you are on a budget too. Spend less money on the actual items, but get them tailored so they look more custom. When it comes to classic style {and things looking more expensive than they really are}, fit is everything.
Take note of the wash instructions and how you should care for it, so that it lasts longer.
If investment pieces are not in your budget anytime in the near future, invest some time looking for the best quality items at a price point you can afford. Look for items without any logos and flashy hardware, in a classic color like, black, brown, camel, navy or cream.
3. Styling: Less Is More
When it comes to putting together an outfit, most Parisians subscribe to the mantra that ‘less is more’. They tend to be fairly minimal.
Stick to delicate pieces of jewelry, or choose one statement item.
When adding prints, pick one. You can’t go wrong with a stripe or check or plaid. Leopard print, of course, is all the rage right now, however it will always be in style.
Avoid details that look too trendy or cheap {think tassels, ruffles and bulky hardware}.
Pay attention to proportion and layering. French girls always seem to know what flatters their bodies and enhances their best features. Too many layers and accessories adds unwanted bulk to a look.
4. Don’t Overlook Details
Just because you are working with basic wardrobe staples, doesn’t mean you have to be basic {and boring for that matter}.
Don’t overlook pant cuffs, rolled sleeves, shirt tucks and how much {or little} you button a shirt – it could make all the difference in your ensemble.
Add pops of details that make any outfit more chic, like lace, a bow, a silk scarf, a hat or some pearl embellishment.
If you are wearing something super feminine, add a masculine touch. If you are wearing something more masculine, add a feminine detail.
Don’t underestimate the power of a belt to accessorize a look or give your outfit more shape.
5. It’s All About Being “Effortless”
The phrase ‘effortlessly chic‘ is almost synonymous with French girls, but what does that really mean? When it comes down to it, what really stands out about Parisians is the fact that they never look like they are trying too hard with their outfits or look like they spent hours getting ready.
Don’t wear anything that makes you look or feel uncomfortable, or a piece that you constantly have to ‘fuss’ with.
If your outfit feels really polished, let your hair and makeup be a little more natural and undone.
Never overdo your makeup – stick to lips or eyes. When in doubt, enhance your ‘best features.’
People can tell when you don’t feel confident with what you are wearing. Never leave the house feeling uncomfortable and unsure of what you have on. Own it!
You have the French girl style!
