A lot of people ask me how I make purchasing choices when it comes to selecting everyday essentials that will serve as a strong wardrobe staple for your closet.
Honestly, there really isn’t a secret formula but I know it can be quite stressful picking what pieces to spend the big bucks on versus where to cut back and save. Whether it’s investing in a killer handbag or spending $300 versus $30 on a pair of classic black pants, there are a few rules that I try to stick to when it comes to making a purchase.
{scroll down to read}
When you spend over $250 on something, it should be worn immediately. I don't care if you do not have anything planned the following day but running to the grocery store, if whatever you purchased is not worn within the first 24 hours of buying it, then it should be returned.
The exception: If you purchased a large amount of different pieces which total over $250 or if you are saving the item for a special occasion. However, you should want to wear your new items a.s.a.p and if you don’t, please return it immediately.
Follow your intuition. If you are in the dressing room and have to ask the salesperson for advice, then your answer is walk away.
The exception: Sometimes it helps to have a second opinion. Snap a photo and send it to a friend who knows you really well and that you trust. Seeing photos of things on also helps with picking out great pieces because you can see what it looks like on your body.
If you see something online or on a blogger that is maxing out your budget, you can always find the look for less online. I used ShopStyle and searched for black cullottes and found my $350 pants for $30.
Shop NowI also found my wool coat style on Mango for a lot less than the version I purchased by Mansur Gavriel.
Shop NowNo two white shirts are created equally, however a girl can only wear so many white shirts. There are so many different fabrics and styles, but a good rule of thumb is that if you purchase a new one, then toss your oldest one. Know what you need versus what you want.
The exception: Don’t get rid of your classic, favorite white button downs for a cheaper trendy version. I recently purchased this trendy Zara top that I know I’ll only get a couple dozen wears out of so I’m not about to get rid of my favorite silk blouse by Thom Browne that cost me $$$.
Also, be sure to give your closet a good clean out at least twice a year. Having less options will really make getting dressed every day feel easier.
Let’s be honest, we all tend to grab the same pieces from our wardrobe time and time again so why not try to makeĀ all of the things in our closet covetable. If you tend to gravitate toward wearing one favorite white top, think about why that top is your favorite. Ask yourself about the fabric, cut and buttons that it was made with. Think about the design and the choices the brand made when creating the piece. This will teach your mind to think of purchasing clothes from a different perspective.
Lately I have been wearing the same 2 pair of jeans every day and when I think about why, a lot of it has to do with my inner-psyche. I haven’t been working out as much as I would like to lately and I have been loving my high waist jeans because they suck in my tummy. Rather than fighting into a pair of skinny jeans and feeling cruddy, I’m allowing myself to wear things that make me feel the most confident.
At the end of the day, I choose everyday essentials that are comfortable, timeless and try to find pieces that will be easy to mix and match with all parts of my closet. If I am going to spend over $250 one something, you better believe that I feel 100% wearing it.
