The term “date night” used to kind of drive me crazy.
Before we had June, I didn’t understand why couples needed a designated “date night” when every night could be considered a date. But then came June and somehow our evenings have turned into a game of how to get dinner on the table before 9pm. Between her night time routine and winding down our work day, come 8pm I am so incredibly exhausted {Grant too!} that I often find myself sitting on the couch or in the bath tub in a complete daze… zoned out.
I know this is all part of the transition into parenthood and I also trust that we will find our new groove, but it didn’t dawn on me how badly Grant and I needed a night for just us two until our first evening in Venice. Mind you, we had the entire night to ourselves so there were no distractions.
And while we truly missed June, it was also quite night getting to hang our parent hats for the evening and have a special night just for us. We got all dressed up and pulled out all the bells and whistles while we were in Venice. Grant even arranged for a boat ride around the canals, complete with a bottle of champagne. How could you NOT have an amazing time.
Over dinner we reconnected over our love of travel and seeing new things. We bonded over our excitement for showing June the world and taking her to new places. While we talked about June, she wasn’t the entire focus of our conversation either. We chatted about work, movies and future plans. It was one of the best dinners we have had in quite some time. We also vowed to have a designated “date night” at least once or twice a month.
Just because our date night happen to take place in Venice, it doesn’t mean that you need to start booking a trip to Italy (ha!). There are several things you can do to reconnect with your partner for free which I’ve listed at the bottom of this post.
Go for a hike
Go to a poetry reading
Visit a state park
Check out some live music
Go on a house tour of homes for sale
Go to the zoo
Play a board game
Take this NY Times quiz together
Play strip chess
Build a blanket fort and watch movies together
Make a relationship time capsule
