Decor Tips 7 years ago We're Moving!
When I left home for college at age 18, I found myself hopping around apartments and condos for nearly 10 years straight.
I loved moving. Year after year I would move once, sometimes twice, carrying along my futon sofa, english bulldog William and stacks of old magazines that I don’t know why I held on to. When I met my husband, I moved into his condo in West Hollywood. A year later, we rented a house and a year after that we moved into another condo while we started working on our very first home. What’s in a home? Is it a structure that consists of four walls and a roof that you fill with all of your material possessions and where you rest your head each night? Since I was 18, since leaving my childhood “home,” I let go of the attachment that “home” meant a place. For me, over the years, I considered home to be where my friends were. Home is where I feel happy. It can be at the beach or my favorite restaurant sitting across the table from the ones I love. But after we moved into our first home in mid-city Los Angeles, things slowly began to change for me.
Very often I would find myself traveling or out and about having dinner with the girls feeling a longing for home. I was homesick – and not just for the place that Grant and I have called “home” for nearly 5 years. I was homesick for everything the space stands for. I get homesick for the smell of coffee at 8am and Grant standing in the kitchen with his disheveled hair. I long for Polly running to the door every time I open it and the couch we all sat on as we mourned the loss of our sweet William. I smile thinking about the night I spent curled up in our bathroom feeling sick from food poisoning and the hundreds of baths I’ve enjoyed in my tub. I crave the buzzing noise from the many parties we have had in our living room and laughter that filled the air from our friends. When I feel homesick, it is not just for the people I consider to be my “home,” but somehow for this house that has become a home as well.
There were a lot of happy times, a few sad and a ton of sweat that went into creating this beautiful place. I will miss this house, but it is time to move on. While it is very bittersweet to leave this place behind, we will take our cherished memories along with us and look forward to creating new ones together.
