I don’t know if it was the fact that we’d lost a couple of close family members that year, or if it was the event of my home being broken into while I was home alone, but I was terrified of going to sleep at night. My parents tried leaving soft country tunes playing on the radio. They would leave my door cracked to allow the light beaming through from the evening news they were watching in the living room. But the one thing that always lulled me into a sweet, deep slumber were my Dad’s stories. My Dad tells the best stories. Some are true stories, some are complete fables and most are a candied blend of both. According to his stories, my father dug to the bottom of the Earth. He battled against pirates, steered cattle across Montana and at one point drove a motorcycle from one side of the U.S. to the other. Blended into his tales were stories of his guitar picking friends who accidentally caught on fire along with ghosts who haunted the deep roots of Mexico. I remember I would fight to stay awake to hear how his stories ended. The greatest thing about his adventures is that they never really had an ending, just a . . . {dot dot dot} that left your mind racing as to what happened next. Most of the time I would fall asleep before they ended. But sometimes I would wake back up to say “Goodnight, I love you,” which left me awake. So, we came up with a secret code to say our goodbyes after he left the room.
After his stories he would squeeze my hand or tap the wall three times for “I love you” and I would tap or squeeze back four times for “I love you too.”
After every story, every adventure, we always concluded with the most important message of all.
I love you.
