I gotta be honest, I’m not the best napper.
In fact, even after a full day, I have a hard time winding down for sleep at night. Whenever I try to take a nap, I end up waking up super cranky and feeling almost worse than I did before. But ’tis the season for naps on the beach, lounging by the lake and hitting snooze on those lazy Sunday mornings where you have nothing to do.
In an effort to become a better napper, I thought I’d dive in to whether or not naps actually do anything for us, and I was quite surprised by what I found.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, {yes, I was quite surprised we have one of those too}, the United States is becoming more and more sleep deprived. They say that naps do not really make up for a “bad night” of sleep, however a quick 20-30 minute siesta can help improve your overall mood and well being.
Here are more additional benefits to napping:
A nap will have you feeling refreshed, revived and awake.
You are more likely to remember the things you are doing or learning if you aren't overtired.
They are more likely to occur when you are sleep deprived.
When you're overtired, you can tend to try to fuel yourself with sugars and fats to try to give yourself an energy boost.
Napping can act as a mini-vacation or break from the day, which in turn can massively decrease daily stress and anxiety.
Here are a few tips of the napping trade to help you become a better napper:
I usually set my alarm for 45 minutes after I lay down so that I have a few minutes to actually fall asleep and nap for 20-30 minutes.
This way, waking up will be a little easier because there will be sun shining through the shades.
Try for somewhere around 1-2pm.
