Every time I sit across from my best friend who has eyelash extensions, I stare with envy.
They always look so good, but for some reason I always chicken out in fear of the horror stories I’ve heard. Luckily, my amazing assistant Erin has tried them {twice} and lived to tell the tale. Here is her experience on all of the pros and cons as well as her top tips for all things to consider if you {like me} are contemplating getting eyelash extensions.

Okay Erin, let’s start with the reasons why I should get eyelash extensions? What were a few of your favorite things about them?
Now I’m definitely not saying I wear makeup every day, but for the times I want to, having lash extensions definitely cut down on the whole process. It’s kind of awesome to roll out of bed and instantly look awake. Having these lashes seriously made me feel ready to take on the day.
Especially for a beach getaway as you can get them wet without the mess of mascara. Also, might I add, they photograph quite well, which is always a perk!
Eyelash extensions are definitely a luxury, but it’s nice to treat oneself to these sorts of things every once in a while. Of course, there are times when my budget doesn’t allow for this, but it’s totally a fun option when it does.
I know this may seem random, but how often do we take the time to put our phones away and do absolutely nothing for over an hour? Well if you’re anything like me, the answer is not often enough. The whole application process takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours {maybe even longer depending on lash length, desired style etc.}. Lying down with my eyes closed for that long is definitely a pro in my book, but I can totally see how it would be a struggle for others.
And what were the cons of getting them?
They were expensive. Enough said.
If there’s one takeaway from this post, please let it be this: Fake eyelashes oftentimes affect your natural lashes, at least in my case they DEFINITELY did. The first time I got them done it was an actual nightmare. I had barely a lash to my name by the end of it. However, this was largely due to the quality of the lash bar I went to. The second time, this was not the case, but my eyelashes were still noticeably shorter and sparser. This is a huge drawback for me.
Not only do you have to be more mindful of your eye area when cleansing, but it is important to avoid oil-based products as they lead to eyelash removal. Furthermore, hot water and steam softens the lash glue, so cold water is recommended when rinsing off, which just adds to the list of things to think about.
You may have to adjust the way you sleep, the way you wash your face, and definitely have to consider the bonus step of washing and brushing your lashes. They also start to look pretty funky after the grow-out and fall out processes begin. This subsequently leads brushing them to become much more tedious.
If someone is taking the plunge on getting lash extensions, what are some valuable tips that they can take with them to their appointment?
If you want them natural, don’t say you want them “natural,” say you want them “SUPER natural.” I learned this the hard way.
Make sure you don’t go too long in extension length for your natural lash length. A trustworthy place will know how long is too long for your lashes, but make sure this is considered in the decision for extension length. If they’re too long for your natural lash, they can feel heavy and stick to your bottom lash line, which as you can imagine, is quite annoying.
Research the place before you go. Make sure they do individual lashes and not clusters, and definitely check out Yelp or Google Reviews.
That only leaves me with one final question… would you ever do it again?
Erin: Well, the first time I did it, I definitely didn’t follow my own tips {but how could I have known better?!}. The lashes looked great in photos, but the aftermath was a disaster. I had to use Latisse to grow back my lashes in time for graduation {LOL}. After that, I swore off fake lashes forever!
… But as the pain of my previous experience wore off with time, I did what any reliable beauty tester would do, and gave them another shot. I did in-depth research this time, and avoided any place with a half-illuminated OPEN sign {I should’ve taken that as a clue my first time around, but hey, you live and you learn}.
So let’s not beat around the bush… would I do it again? Yes, in fact, I would, but probably only for a special occasion or vacation. The look and convenience are wonderful, but in my opinion, the expense and potential consequences leave much to be desired.
