I will never forget my first winter in Chicago. I was totally unprepared and had a measly light unlined jacket and nearly froze to death all winter. It didn’t take long before I realized that you need a variety of coats to carry you from fall through winter. From puffy coats that go past the knee to shorter lined bomber jackets that are light and flirty, there is an outwear option for just any environment. We do not get crazy low temperatures in Los Angeles, but I do have a few trips in the pipeline that have me planning my winter coat line up early this season. Here are a few tips I’ve learned over the years when shopping for winter coats:
01. Look for quality and don’t be too bummed out if you get something that doesn’t feel as good as it photographs. That certainly wasn’t the case with this affordable faux shearling jacket from Nordstrom.
02. Be patient. This is why it’s a good idea to start the search for your perfect winter coat now, before the temps drop.
03. Follow the 3 F’s – Fabric, Fit and Fill {what is inside, is it lined?}. There are a ton of good puffy options from Nordstrom. I’m really loving the lighter colors because they seem less bulky.
04. Handle and store with care. If it’s wool get it dry cleaned at the end of the season. Keep coats in a garment bag while you’re not wearing them to protect your coat from temperature changes which can age the material.
Be sure to head over to Nordstrom where you will find plenty of outerwear options to carry you from the first leaves that fall to the final snow flake this winter season.
What is your favorite style of winter coat?
Special thank you to Nordstrom for partnering on this post
