The other day a good friend of mine suggested that I write a blog post about the rituals that I do every time I fly.
I honestly hadn’t really given my tiny habits much thought, but I guess after traveling with me a few times she pointed out how they were “not normal” but also could serve as being helpful to others. Perhaps some of you share the same formalities or have some of your own.

Maybe everyone does this, but I honestly rarely see people at the airport with earphones in their ears. I cannot tell you how much more of an enjoyable experience the airport is when you have your own soundtrack to listen to. I literally put earphones in from the moment my foot hits the pavement outside of the airport until they land at my final destination.
I just found out that it is illegal to light candles in hotels in New York so readers beware. With that said, I've been taking tiny travel candles with me on my trips since I can remember. It truly does make your final destination feel more like home.
I'm never without my journal, especially when I fly. My best ideas have come to me when I'm stuck on a plane for hours making lists. Plus, when all entertainment options fail, at the very least you will at least have a pen and paper to play with.
I get a tall bottle of water when I'm at the airport and make it my own personal challenge to finish it before we've hit cruising altitude. It's my own little game of hydration ho-hum.
No matter what {unless I have a meeting I have to rush off to}, the very first thing I do when I reach any destination is go for a run. It's the best way to kick off the jet lag and get to know my surroundings - even if it's a place I've visited dozens of times before.
I never pack the night before a trip - always the day before. I hate nothing more than feeling rushed the day of a flight, or rushing around wasting my last night at home buried knee deep in my luggage. I give myself approximately one hour the day before and hammer it out. This also allows me to let go of anxiety that I've left something behind.
It took me a while to pick something to collect from my travels that was small enough and valuable enough (or at least in my eyes) to bring back from every single destination. I love collecting pens from all of the nice hotels that I've visited. I have a cup on my vanity that holds them all and it's my most prized possession. My favorite pen? The Peninsula Paris!
