I used to fly to NY once a month for work and I forgot how challenging it can be to take photos for my website and social media when traveling solo.
Over the past several years I have had Grant traveling with me who acts as my main photographer. It’s so nice having someone to snap candid moments from our hotel room, dinner tables and little moments between running errands and taking meetings.
My trip back to New York for fashion week is just around the corner and since Grant isn’t planning to come along with me, I thought I’d share a few tips and tricks for how I create content when I’m solo.
Selfies don't always have to be as obvious as the above photo that I took a few years ago in Hawaii. Unexpected mirror selfies like the one I took in the hotel in New York are great too. Or perhaps you are walking by a cool storefront widow or the car window of a taxi. Always be on the look out for reflections that are different.
Get very, very comfortable with the self timer or even purchase a remote that you can connect to your camera. It will feel like a pain at first but once you get used to it, self timers can really be a god send. I use self timers ALL the time, even for photos of Grant and I. I stack up a pile of books or move a chair to get the right shot. It takes about 50 photos but there will always be a diamond in the rough. The below photo was taken on a self timer.
If you are attending events while traveling, whether it's a wedding or a store opening, use the photographer on hire to snap a photo for you. Be sure to get their business card and even offer to tag them on Instagram!
You don't have to be in EVERY shot. Post food shots or landscape photos and even speak to the fact that you are dining or traveling solo.
Better yet, invest in a tripod that is made specifically for your iphone. I recently ordered this one for my upcoming travels and I cannot wait to put it to work!
You can also put random parts of your body in the shot {i.e. a hand or a foot} and ask strangers to take photos of you! Do you guys have any pro trips for fellow creators? Leave a comment below!
