I think my favorite day in Hong Kong was when Alexandra and I took a day trip to Cheung Chau Island. It’s a 30 minute ferry ride from the city & has been inhabited longer than most areas of the Hong Kong territory. The people, the smells, the delicious food and history of Cheung Chau Island made it a nice little escape from the hustle & bustle of the city.

We picked the absolute perfect day to head out to the island. The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Tueng Ng Festival, is one of the favorites amongst the revelry of Chinese Festivals celebrated in the territory and we were able to get up close and personal with the races. In a tradition that goes as far back as the 3rd century teams of paddlers race the long narrow boats accompanied by the beat of the drum down to the finish line. You can imagine the excitement as we watched and walked around town to the deep beating of the drums!
After ducking into the local market where there was fish, meat and local produce for sale, we headed back to the mainland for dinner. I’d heard so many marvelous things about a new hip restaurant called “Yardbird” so we decided to walk over from the hotel.
Luckily we were able to squeeze in with no wait to Yardbird, which specializes in yakitori (skewered, grilled chicken). The many different parts of a chicken, including the heart, liver, oyster, neck, etc. are grilled over traditional binchotan charcoal. I had no idea that Sunday’s Groceries, where we had lunch the day prior, is owned by the same restaurant group. They really know what they’re doing! Sunday’s Groceries served up one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had {which says a lot coming from this Texas gal! There are a few pictures from that lunch at the end of this post}.
