I was picking up on a conversation that only two lovers would understand.
Being home for a few weeks from my latest trip to New York, there was one particular evening that I sat alone, opposite from an elderly couple, that I can’t seem to get out of my mind. For the love of eavesdropping, I couldn’t stop myself from paying extra careful attention to a sophisticated duo that was dining at the Four Seasons NY only a table away from me. She was dressed in what looked like a St. John pant suit and as she stood up to make a break for the ladies room, he stood up in a very cautious and rickety manner to eagerly pull the chair out for her. The dignified gesture made butterflies stir in my heart because it was apparent that the simple act of standing wasn’t an easy move for him to make. He sat back down and waited patiently for his love to return. As she came back to the table, he repeated the gesture, only this time the waiter who was waiting nearby helped the man rise so that he could, in return, pull out her chair. She sat; they ate. The forks mirrored each other and while their conversation was exceptionally random and hard to follow, there was a romantic way in which they followed their own train of thought. He was the yin to her yang, the peanut butter to her jelly and in that quick moment I caught a glimpse of a relationship that I pray I have one day.
A glimpse into a true love, a simple dinner conversation, that could only be understood between soul mates.
