I’ve been sitting at the desk all morning and just as my stomach hit a growl and debated going inside for some lunch, I looked out over the garden and a beautiful little butterfly caught my eye. I’ve always believed butterflies to be quite symbolic and I think it’s from the long summers I would spend with my Granny in her rose gardens. Granny was famous for her beautiful roses and I spent countless afternoons playing “make believe” between the dozens of rows that were bedded throughout her big backyard. The smell of roses, mint and lemon verbena would kiss my nose as butterflies often danced around Granny and I. She would almost always have on a full skirt with a white button down blouse tucked in and white Ked sneakers laced up with, surprisingly, very little mud on them.
My long, stringy blond hair would fall on my bare shoulders in a tangled mess. I hated wearing shirts because boys didn’t wear shirts and I wanted to be a boy. I would just wear jeans until my parents would no longer allow for me to run around barefoot and topless. Finally, my Mom wrestled me to the ground and slapped a white button down blouse on me, just like my Granny’s. It was light, made from cotton, and airy.
When I sat down to create a button down blouse for the Splendid X Damsel Cotton Collection, I wanted it to feel just like my Granny’s. I wanted it to be cool enough to wear in the summer months, and light enough to layer under sweaters in the winter.
My gaze stuck on this beautiful little butterfly for quite sometime as it sat next to my garden. Children were playing at the school next door in the play yard and my Spotfiy playlist ticked to “Raven’s Song” as my eyes transfixed to where the bold black base met an orange kiss on the wings of this beautiful little creature. ‘How long are you going to sit there? Beautiful little butterfly?’ I asked in my head. My thoughts wondered if butterflies liked to bathe in the sun just as humans do. Does this particular butterfly have a home? A family? How long to butterflies live? I raised to my feet to snap a quick video and just as another thought hit me, the feeling that the butterfly was my Granny fluttering by to say “Hello,” the beautiful little butterfly spread her wings and flew away.
