When I went home for my first Christmas as a married woman I knew there was one heirloom I wanted to bring back with me: My great grandmother’s quilt. Otherwise known as “Big Granny” because she was the real deal, the queen bee of the Duprie family.
There are many traditions regarding the design and characteristics of quilts, and they may be made or given to mark important life events such as marriage, the birth of a child, a family member leaving home, or graduations. This particular quilt was not designed with me in mind (and I’m not sure what occasion it was created for), but I like to think that Big Granny would hope for her work to be passed down generations. Every time I curl up in her quilt it brings a certain type of warmness to my heart. I want to share my happy times laying in the quilt wrapped up on the couch watching tv with my honey. And when I’m sad, the quilt offers an unexplainable type of support, like a mothers arms wrapped around me. I hope you are all fortunate enough to have a quilt passed along to you, or some other type of family heirloom that brings you comfort.
