Like many of you, my brother and I grew up making home made movies. However, I would personally consider our “home made movies” to be true Oscar winning contenders. We poured our heart and soul into them and there was a part of me that genuinely believed that one day, some day, my brother and I would move to this place we call La La Land and make movies to would make it to the big screen. Needless to say, life got in the way and for reasons that are neither here nor there we found ourselves not on a Hollywood studio set, but in a theater yesterday cozying up to watch a movie. Justin insisted that I see it in theaters {it wasn’t his first time watching} and I really had no idea why he was acting so persistently. Even when we were children, working on a movie, Justin would encourage me “go further into the bushes so it looks real when you come out!” as I crawled around in a dark green dress acting like Alice. But when Justin feels strongly about something, there is usually a reason for it. There was a reason he drug me to see La La Land on a random Thursday afternoon at 2:15pm, smack dab in the middle of my work day.
Outside of the fact that I have been listening to the La La Land soundtrack non-stop since we watched to movie, I feel transformed. To my dismay, I forgot what it feels like to feel yourself surrendering to a film. To get so completely lost in the music, the characters, the meaning is a rare combination of effects a movie can have an a person. Walking around humming its tune, feeling its inspiration and seeing the world with a new lens was not something I had experienced since my “Alice in Wonderland” days. As our country is undertaking a massive shift on today, I could not be more thankful to have a true outlet from the confusion, anger and stress of life.
