The Power of Consistency

It all started on May 25th, 2017. You may have noticed my brief stint in Brooklyn last month which ended up not lasting as long as I’d originally planned on. Ladies, I had found myself in a true rut. After {finally} exiting the grieving period after William died I was hoping to switch things up and inject some happiness back into my life. Unfortunately, I came home from this “extended stay” in NY empty handed, and confused by what I was doing wrong. I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Workouts felt torturous and I couldn’t seem to get my mind to switch from “woe is me” to “wow!” That was the day I decided to start a new morning routine that would change everything.

Step One

I invested in a Moleskin journal and having no idea where to begin, I simply went online and starting google searching positive quotes. Every day I would write these down. I put the date at the top of each day and committed myself to writing one page of quotes and one page of affirmations. “You are happiness” “You are a leader” “Your heart is beautiful and feels love” I started here and would do this every morning I woke up, before I picked up my phone.

Share

Step Two

After my blogger gal pal, Marianna Hewitt, saw me posting these daily quotes to my Instagram stories she recommended the book “Miracle Morning.” This took my routine to the next level.

You can find a moleskin journal at your local bookstore but if you tend to shop at Target you can also pick one up while you are there!

The Miracle Morning

This book was one of the best purchases I have made in 2017 so far. It is easy to read and truly registered with me in a way that is invaluable.

Step Three

Set alarm clock 1 hour earlier than the time I “need” to wake up to make time for my new “Miracle Morning” routine.

Share

Step Four

I made a list of things that make me feel my best. These are things that I do and can do on a daily basis that help me find my most true and authentic self. These things would vary from playing the piano and snuggling with Polly to keeping a strong morning and nightly skin care routine. Whatever it is, this list has to be just for you and fill up your inner self with confidence and assurance.

Step Five

Meditate for 5 minutes every day. I didn’t really know how to do this until I researched a bit but now I am hooked!

Share

Step Six

Stretch. Slowly, breathing in and out. It’s the first thing I do when my feet hit the floor and it’s how my body wakes up.

Negative

Supreme Sleep Set

When working on my morning routine, wether it be stretching or meditating I love to wear something comfortable. I am obsessed with this sleep set from Negative, it is so comfortable and I love the simplicity of both the top and bottom.

Step Seven

Try something new. SKII sent me a few new products to test out for a sponsored Instagram post which I ended up loving. “GenOptics Aura Essence” – I mean, how much better of a name could that be. I could feel my inner essence start to shine through every morning and night that I would take careful consideration and care toward my face. On top of this, I signed up for a meditation class, a pilots training class to go back to work on my pilots license AND booked a trip to someplace I’d never visited that’s driving distance from my house {Joshua Tree}.

GenOptics Aura Essence 1.6 oz

I loved trying out this brightening serum by SK-II. Not only does it target dark spots and dullness, it leaves you skin feeling more radiant and smooth.

Step Eight

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. I cannot really express to you in a written word how big of a difference the power of consistency has played in my life over the past month. But I am genuinely starting to feel a true difference. This is my morning routine that I do every day before I get out of bed. It might not be for everyone, but I can promise you one thing. If you do something consistently, whether it’s working out, eating right or taking great care of your skin – you will see a difference.

Listen, I’m not saying that everything is all fine and dandy with my life now but I really do feel like I’m on the right track to turning things around. Have you guys ever found yourself in a rut? How did you get out?

the miracle morning is a good book…I do the glass of water thing every morning and it does help…I get like this but I see a therapist…so when I do…we just map out our next step together

I’ve noticed you’ve been going through something. You’ve seemed off and that you’ve been searching for something. Sometimes I wonder about the pressure bloggers go through when they have to keep chasing the next thing like clothes, trips, a lifestyle, and that can wear on your sole inevitably. I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself. Sometimes hormones can be out of balance, which is also a good thing to check out in any case. I appreciate your honesty and not always painting a perfect picture. That’s important for your well being as well. xoxo

Thank you so much for making time to leave such a thoughtful comment. x

I love this so much!! Every morning I write down a minimum of 3 things I’m grateful for, tell myself today is a good day to have a good day, and visualize my day going beautifully. I used to meditate more often, but I am making a commitment to start doing it again every day because I saw the benefits so quickly. Also going to purchase Miracle Morning. Can’t wait to read! xo

    • Jacey

I love the routine of making gratitude notes. It’s so important to pay attention to all of the wonderful things we DO have in life. Thank you for leaving such a sweet note x

  • Consistency is really the key for almost everything in life….. day in and day out the tiniest of steps and changes will make waves down the line. Glad you found something to help you out 🙂

  • You are so right – consistency is also key but I love this routine. i think we spend so much time thinking about what we can fix and we don’t really focus on the things that we are doing well!

Do you mind sharing what piano music you play? Playing the piano calms me as well, but it’s easy to drift away from it if I get distracted. You almost have to make time to play it.

Loved this post! I have definitely been in ruts before too, caused by multiple different things. I find that really drawing close to scripture and talking to God every morning before picking up my phone has been the best cure! I’ve also tried to down a huge cup of water first thing, do a little stretching like you, and journal a little bit as well! I think the consistency of all that (as you said) is very uplifting! Prayers for you as you continue to recover! I know losing William was the worst 🙁 I don’t know what I’ll do when one of our pups goes to heaven 🙁

    XO!!

I love, love, love this post❤️ I’m so sorry for the loss of your William. I lost my dog about a year ago, and it has definitely left a hole in my heart. I’m glad you are starting to feel better. You bring so many people inspiration. I’m definitely going to incorporate some of your tips into my morning routine. Thank you for sharing this part of your life, it is much appreciated. xo, debi

Great post, thank you. I’m about to lose my dog, and I’ve been thinking I have no idea how to save myself from the grief that’s coming. Consistency is a great tip, and I truly hope you are feeling better after William.

    • I lost my 15 year old dog last year. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. At the time, my therapist recommended that I took a walk everyday (I didnt it), but she was right. You need to get a lot of distractions and get outside. Sending you love during this difficult time ♥

      • Hayley Elizabeth Swinamer

Thank you for the kind advice, it’s so encouraging to see random nice-ness on the internet. 🙂 I hope you are feeling better after your loss. <3

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. All I can say is that slowly with time the pain will turn into loving memories of your baby. My thoughts are with you. x

Ruts and the fog that comes with them… so much added heartache on top of an already tough time. Thanks for sharing what’s helping you through it all. I’m currently in a difficult season- learning how to use a polaroid-style camera, finding new ways to be creative, and quality time with God has been so helpful.

    Sending warm vibes your way!

  • I loved reading this post! I’m sorry you ended up empty handed coming back from NY. I’m moving there next month and am hoping to gain more success because of it. Even if I don’t I’m happy you shared these tips with us as a way to rekindle that spark. I sincerely look forward to reading your blog nearly every day. Although its been about a week of missing out, I’m so happy catching up on all your posts. Favorite blogger!

  • I have been in one serious “woe is me” rut. And I’m so NEVER that person. I think I need to switch up my routine. Already started a new workout that may inject some interest and motivation in my day to day routine. And I too have felt the need to escape somewhere to experience new things (an extended stay in Paris has been front of mind). I have feared it would also leave me empty handed upon returning as home won’t change while you’re away.

  • I’m laying in bed right now and stumbled across this post. I’ve read the miracle morning, keep a gratitude journal, etc. but have NEVER had the motivation to just wake up a bit earlier to get myself moving in the right direction first thing. I’m setting my alarm right now. Thank you!

So inspirational! I picked up the morning journal entries and it is amazing how life changing it is!
