6 Blogging Basic Necessities

The other day one of you tweeted at me asking for my favorite tools that I use for my blog. I used it as inspiration to put together a quick list of tools I use regularly for my blogging business. I hope this helps!

Do you have any tips or tools to share? Please leave a comment below!

Canon Powershot G7x Mark II

This is hands down my favorite camera for shooting video and photos on the go. Most of my Damsel Diaries videos from trips were shot using this compact camera. There's a pop out screen that lets you see yourself while you are taping and the wifi comes in super handy for snapping Instagram photos and dropping them straight to your phone. The battery lasts a lifetime and I honestly do not know what I'd do without this camera.

iTunes Store

Camera Bag 2 App

Yes I love Photoshop and yes I took a 15 hour class learning how to use it. But I still love using my old faithful photo editing program that is super duper user friendly and easy for editing photos quickly.

Juice Pack Air Iphone 7

Don't leave home without it.

American Express

Starwood Credit Card

First of all if you don't have a proper business account set up for your blog, do that. Secondly, charge everything to either an airline credit card of {pick my favorite} Starwood AMEX. I cannot tell you how many free nights I've had at the St. Regis New York thanks to this bad boy!

Bluetooth Camera Shutter Remote Control

It's tricky, but if you have patience and are really keen to shoot yourself {i.e. you don't travel everywhere with a photographer} then I suggest having a bluetooth camera controller for your cell phone.

Instax Wide 300 Instant Camera

This makes for a perfect gift for any blogger. It's a creative alternative to take polaroids on vacations and scan them for your website or Instagram.

  • Great essentials! I was expecting a DSLR but I’ve heard great things about the Canon Powershot!

  • I love reading more about the tech stuff! Would be good to see some more ‘tech’ posts in the future 🙂

Definitely have my eye on the Canon G7X or something similar!

  • I’ve been on the hunt for a new, small camera and love hearing that Canon is so good!

  • Ah thanks for this! I actually think a lot of the bloggers end up using the same equipment/apps etc. But your advice is spot on! Love the credit card tip! x

  • Yup, need all of them:P

    Shall We Sasa

  • Such fun items!!
    xo, Syd

  • I love your picks! Especially the bluetooth remote and the Instax! I’m still trying to figure out how to shoot myself if I don’t have a photographer on hand but I really don’t know how! Would love some tips!

  • Great selections <3 I think for me the biggest one that I have to go buy is the charger for my iphone. I don't know how many times I went out and my battery was dead…and there was something cute to take a photo of 😛

  • Love the camera . . .do you guys have any other recommendations? What do you use? im on a Sony Nex 6 .with a 55 lens. But looking to upgrade!

Pls let me know if you have any suggestions! (or if you know a great photographer in NY!)

  • Jennifer Wilson

Ok I am literally getting a Starwood Amex today! xx

  • Hillary Folkvord

Great post!!! Would love to more about your editing process, maybe in an upcoming post ; } Your photos on instagram are amazing, would love to learn how you make them so bright and airy…

  • I def agree with the first basic necessity: the canon camera! I keep it in my purse just in case I find the perfect blogging opportunity and want to take pictures with better quality than my iPhone! ?

  • I actually love all of these so much! That charging case is 100% going on my Christmas list.

  • Lovey Fleming

Thank you SO much for sharing! So important to have your tech together!

  • These were some unexpected tips and items, so this was so helpful! I would l-o-v-e for you to do a post on how to have a separate account for blog expenses, what you deduct as expenses for taxes, etc. I know that’s not a normal post for you, but you are always so honest and truly seem to have your sh*t together, so I would be forever grateful for some advice from you on these topics. I’m still a pretty small blogger (in the grand scheme of things), but do file taxes on blog earnings. There just isn’t clear information out there on what I can deduct or not, and how to organize my finances!

PS – love your name 🙂

  • Maja Zwolinski Havemann

Oh my word a ‘self help’ article that is actually helpful! Brilliant tips thank you. xx

  • Alright, I’m on the right track — I have three of these (Canon, Starwood AMEX and the bluetooth shutter release). Question, Jacey – at what point in your blogging career did you start editing your pics? I want to learn Photoshop so I can really tighten up my pics, but I’m so early into my blogging career that I’m still just focused on posting consistently. Once that’s down, then I will pivot to enhancing the look & feel of blog & pics. Was that your experience as well? Thanks!!

  • Stacey @ BICW

Ok so currently I have the SPG amex and the Instax wide 300. I didn’t go for the Canon I’m afraid…more of a Nikon gal! whoops 😀
