I woke up in a cold sweat a few nights ago.
This may be due to the fact that my life is a bit out of sorts these days. Since we are currently renovating our new house, everything {and I mean, everything} is in storage. I won’t truly notice something is missing until I need it. For example, when I invite friends over and I want to put out a bowl of pretzels. No serving bowls. The other day I had to upload some photos from my Canon to the computer but couldn’t find the chord. It’s packed away.
I have a few reccurring dreams and in this particular dream, my childhood home is catching fire and I am rushing around trying to gather my most prized possessions. These things include the following {aside from humans & pets, obviously}: My huge yellow stuffed rabbit I’ve had since I was 3 years old named “Sue,” the box of hundreds of love letters my Granny and her husband wrote pre, during and post WWII. A handkerchief my Meme gave me. The vintage suitcase my mother got me Senior year of High School.
I know exactly where each and every one of these prized possessions are and in the event of a fire, they will be saved. However, a few nights ago I woke up in a cold sweat when I realized that one of these very important items was not in my possession. The vintage suitcase.
This isn’t just your ordinary vintage suitcase. It holds thousands and thousands of pages from every single one of my journals that I have kept since age 10. They are filled with years and years worth of my written memories, worries, concerns, happiness and biggest fears in life. I’ve carried them through the great state of Texas, they went with me to college and tagged along as I drove my car across the country to Los Angeles. I reference them when I am feeling blue, whimsical or need to relate to a past story or fear.
In a very strange way it feels like a part of me is missing.
