Damsel Diaries 10 years ago Damsel Diaries // Princess & The Pea
Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess but he was having difficulty finding a suitable wife.
Something was always wrong with those he met, and he couldn’t be certain any of the girls were real princesses. One stormy night a young woman drenched with rain was seeking shelter in the prince’s castle. She claims to be a princess, so the prince’s mother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds. In the morning the guest told her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard in the bed; which she is certain has bruised her. The prince rejoiced. Only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through such a quantity of bedding. The two were married, and the pea was placed in the Royal Museum!
This story always reminds me to be sensitive and compassionate to others no matter what I am going through. It is easy to be wrapped up in your own schedule, your own priorities and agenda. Sometimes life delivers you a big fat stop sign when things start moving too fast and you lose sight of what is most important. This week, life delivered me with a pea of my own. A pea in the shape of a kidney stone {yikes!}. It’s funny how things that you once consider at the top of your priority list quickly take a back seat when your health is at risk. Luckily, the pain only lasted 6 {long} hours and a minor trip to the ER and now I have a clean bill of health. While it would be easy for me to resent the pea that I was dealt, it would also be naive to not take a closer look at the peas we are given in life.
All of our experiences, both good and bad, happen in order to teach us a lesson. Even the really painful ones. The hard part is finding out what that lesson is because sometimes it is so deeply hidden that we won’t always have the answers right away. It can take hours, months or even years until we are shown the answers. The only thing that is certain is, like a kidney stone, one way or another time will always pass.
The prince needed a pea in order to find his sensitive princess. And I needed a pea as a reminder to slow down and smell the roses. I hope whatever pea you are given this week provides you with a useful lesson of your own.
