Health 7 years ago 6 Tips For Avoiding the Flu {and Cold}
Everyone, and I mean everyone {but me}, seems to have the flu. It’s been circulating around Los Angeles over the past few weeks and it’s made it’s way into my house. Both of my parents, my brother and now husband have all been stung by this nasty bug and I am doing anything and everything I can to not get infected. With a trip Paris days away, I’m taking all precautions to avoid getting sick. I have been lining my nose with Neosporin and hitting the Vitamin C hard. I took Grant to the urgent care yesterday and found out he has influenza type A. The doctor prescribed him with an anti-viral medication called Tamiflu and also put me on a mild dose as a preventative.
I asked my Instagram audience to chime in on home remedies and tricks to avoid getting the flu. They offered up some very strong suggestions that I thought I would share in this post. Scroll down to read more.

My friend Kim from the blog Eat, Sleep,Wear says to “wash your hands 5,000 time a day.”
@KellyKnt says to “Get a flu shot. Pro Tip: Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds and sing Happy Birthday while you do it to make sure it’s 20 seconds long.”
@JustEnoughThyme advised to put a few drops of “oil of oregano under the tongue AM & PM. Burns like hell but in a good way.”
@Bgeng suggested to “drink bone broth!”
@sarahphillip says “When you feel like you have a cold or flu coming, take zinc tablets and vitamin C”
@lynnesitton said to use “lots of oils!” and says because oregano oil burns she puts it on her kids feet instead
A few more tips that I found with online research include:
- Wash your hands vigorously for 15 seconds with warm water and soap.
- Avoid close contact with anyone and if you shake someones hand, wash your hands immediately after.
- Get a flu shot
- Keep your surroundings clean by Cloroxing and open up windows in the house
- Get plenty of rest to keep your immune system high strong
- Use alcohol based hand sanitizer
